100 Days of Woodmill

Today marks 100 days since Southampton Scouts took over operation of Woodmill and we’re really proud about our achievements since then. We’d like to thank our entire volunteer team, as well as our partners - both fellow charities and the local businesses that have been helping us.

What have we been up to? To mark 100 days - here is 100 things we’ve done so far:

  1. 🪑 Transformed the Reception Area into an outside seating and break out space

  2. 💡 Installed new outside lighting for Stoneham Lodge and Sheds

  3. 🔥 More campfires than we can count!

  4. 🕳️ Dug out and repaired the gates to the car park

  5. ⏰ Upgraded and repaired the fire and intruder alarms

  6. 💡 Replaced broken interior lighting with modern energy efficient LED lighting

  7. 🎣 Rediscovered the pond dipping area

  8. 🪴 Cleared a LOT of brambles and himalayan balsam

  9. 🚮 Cleaned up the area around the sheds, disposed of rubbish

  10. ♻️ Over 100 tyres sent off site to be properly recycled

  11. ✂️ Repaired the lawnmower and mowed the lawn

  12. ♿ Re-instated temporary accessible parking - much closer to the building

  13. ✨ Plenty of cleaning to make the inside spaces clean and sparkly!

  14. 🫧 Installed a replacement washing machine and tumble dryer. Thank you to Antony and Matthew for their kind donations.

  15. 🖌️ Fixed a lot of holes in the walls and re-painted the classroom

  16. 💻 Launched this fantastic new website

  17. ⛺ Held our first camp

  18. 🧗 Refurbished the low rope

  19. 🎈 Hosted our first birthday party session on the low ropes

  20. 🐝 Removed wasp nests from the Archery Range (and we didn't even use arrows!)

  21. 🎯 Upgraded targets and bought new arrows for archery.

  22. 🦇 Used reclaimed wood to build new bird and bat boxes. Have you spotted them yet?

  23. 🗝️ Installed lockers in the changing rooms

  24. 🚑 Upgraded first aid equipment, including a new emergency catastrophic bleed kit and repaired AED

  25. 🚿 Replaced the taps in the toilets

  26. 🪑 We're going on a bear chair hunt, we're going to catch a big one quite a few missing ones!

  27. 🪧 New signage at the road

  28. 🍰 Eaten far too much cake and sausage rolls from Woodmill Coffee Kitchen

  29. 🏫 First school bookings, and many more since

  30. 🧡 First charity on site, and many more since

  31. 🌲 Welcomed the 14th Scouts fo the Winter

  32. 🛠️ Fixed the gates by the Road

  33. 🌳 Met the lovely folks at the Environment Agency who look after the River Itchen and it's wildlife.

  34. 🔨 Repaired a particularly precarious bit of the lake bank - more to come

  35. 🪜 Installed a new ladder on the lake pontoon

  36. 🧹 Cleaned up fishing tackle and wire from the public river

  37. 👷 Filled in potholes with spare gravel

  38. 🪚 Removed logs from the car park - soon to be campfire seating!

  39. 🥇 Launched our badge competition and looked at all of the fantastic entries

  40. 👷‍♂️ Replaced the roof on one of our sheds, and repaired the others

  41. 🥓 Cooked bacon on an open fire in the roundhouse

  42. 🎅 Hosted Santa and 140 Squirrel Scouts, siblings and parents for our Squirrel Christmas Event

  43. 🚨 Our explorer scouts resucitated Santa

  44. 🪿 Welcomed the geese back for the winter

  45. 🌷 Beaver scouts planted bulbs around the car park

  46. 🖌️ Began painting our sheds to protect them for the winter

  47. 🚪 Repaired or replaced the door handles on the building doors.

  48. 🫂 Made lots of new friends

  49. 🎄 Decorated for christmas

  50. ⛏️ Dug a very long trench and then filled it back in (why, well you'll just have to wait a bit longer...)

  51. ⚽ Played games in the inflatable football pitch

  52. 🏕️ Pitched a lot of tents, and then packed them away neatly.

  53. 👩🏻‍🍳 Started work on redecorating the kitchen

  54. 🚽 Planning to refurbish the changing rooms and toilets

  55. 🍂 Blown around a lot of leaves, and then again the next day when the trees gift us some more.

  56. 🏗️ Scraped and levelled the car park as much as we can in the wet

  57. ⚜️ Started our necker wall in the hall (if you come to visit, we'd love you to contribute by leaving us your group's to put up)

  58. 🚦 Worked out the timing of the Woodmill Lane traffic lights

  59. 🔌 Explored the loft and begun running new cabling through it

  60. 🚲 Removed the doors from the bike shelter and rotated it to take up less space

  61. 🪣 Mopped the floors, a lot. The mud just keeps coming!

  62. 🔴 Introduced slingshots as a new range-based activity

  63. 🦌 Spotted plenty of deer

  64. 🗺️ Given more site tours than we can remember

  65. 🎯 Re-fletched archery arrows and repaired bows

  66. 🛞 Moved around a lot of gravel

  67. 🚣 Built a new store for the rafting barrels and kit

  68. 🐟 Welcomed Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust and the Wessex Rivers Trust

  69. 📝 Engaged in the Lower Itchen Consultation

  70. 🛶 Built our first raft

  71. 👣 Cleared pathways around the lake

  72. ⛪ Built and opened our reflection space

  73. 👩‍🍳 Partnered with Woodmill Coffee Kitchen to offer catering to residentials and events

  74. 📍 Found all (we hope?) of the orienteering markers

  75. 🕯️ Added low level lighting along the path to the back of the site

  76. 🔋 Replaced the defribulator battery

  77. 🪓 Added soft tomahawks as a new activity

  78. 🌿 Cleared the overgrown brambles and weeds around the bushcraft area

  79. ⚡ Traced electrical cables around the site using a cable scanner

  80. 🏠 Welcomed Southampton City Network to Woodmill - a permanent home for our 18-25 section

  81. ♻️ Safely disposed of many leftover paint cans, blown light bulbs and other hazardous materials

  82. 🗓️ Hosted our AGM at Woodmill

  83. 👥 Welcomed our new Trustee Board Members to a training session in the Hall

  84. 🪿 Named our site mascots - Woody and Milly the geese!

  85. 🏹 Introduced soft tomahawks and soft archery as new activities for younger children

  86. 🌱 Cleared the area for and starting building our vegetable and herb garden

  87. 🎁 Christmas Cracker Challenge - over 80 Explorer Scouts at christmas event

  88. 🐦 Spotted lots of birds - kingfishers, herons and much more!

  89. 🎙️ Made contact with scouts all over the world via amateur radio for JOTA/JOTI

  90. 🤖 Built robots, soldered circuit boards and learnt about STEM

  91. ⭐ Appointed volunteer team leaders for water activities, maintenance, environment, admin and more

  92. 🔍 Set up a governence committee specifically for Woodmill

  93. 📜 Created new site-specific policies and protocols to adapt Woodmill to be safer

  94. 💭 Dreamed big dreams

  95. 🍕 Eaten a lot of pizza

  96. 🗑️ Filled too many skips

  97. 🧭 Explored the old boardwalk and breach at the back of the site

  98. 🔒 Fixed all the locks - it's great to have keys that work properly!

  99. 💰 Applied for plenty of grant funding

  100. 🚜 Pulled our first fallen tree out of the lake
